University of Florida

Gainesville Section

Mission
The IEEE EMBS
Gainesville section seeks to create unique opportunities for interdisciplinary
research, education, and training of graduate and medical students in the
University of Florida Colleges of Medicine and Engineering. The realization of
the mission is the development of new translational (bench to bedside)
technologies, new facilities to perform biomedical research, new biomedical
curricula, and new mentoring programs for students and professionals. It is a
major objective of the UF society to help create the new generation of
scientists by providing a vibrant research environment, mentoring, seminars,
and undergraduate outreach opportunities in the Colleges of Engineering and
Medicine. This motivation is born out of ongoing collaborations between the UF
faculty members in the UF McKnight Brain Institute, College of Engineering, UF
Medical School, and Shands Hospital. The field of interest of the Society is
the application of the concepts and methods of the physical and engineering
sciences in biology and medicine. This covers a very broad spectrum ranging
from formalized mathematical theory through experimental science and
technological development to practical clinical applications. It includes
support of scientific, technological, and educational activities.

Message from the Founder

It is with
great pleasure that I would like to announce that the Gainesville IEEE Section
has successfully petitioned its own IEEE-EMBS member chapter (Engineering in Medicine
and Biology). To celebrate and formalize the beginning of the chapter, in the
Fall semester we will have a series of speakers on EMBS topics and will have
programs for supporting the EMBS members and EMBS students of the Gainesville
IEEE Section. This is an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to
foster new collaborations and interactions.
To get the
EMBS chapter off the ground, I will need your help. If you are interested in
helping to organize EMBS activities please contact me via email (jcs77 at
ufl.edu).
Sincerely,
Justin C. Sanchez, Ph.D.
